An improvement

I bike on Nicholson Street to access the Home Depot on E-W Hwy, Kaiser Permanente on Ager Road, the NW Brach Trail, the Sligo Creek Trail, and parts of NE & NW Washington, DC. The proposed traffic calming measures would be an improvement.

• If it’s not already part of the project, please remove/eradicate the stray remnants of roadway markings that are no longer in use (e.g., the stop lines on Nicholson Street at the intersection with 30th Ave, that make it look like there should be stop signs where there are not).
• I agree with other commenters that the project could be improved by reducing travel lane widths to 10 feet, or assuming the yellow center line is going to remain removed (or in its current state of partially removed) a shared street with a total travel lane width of 20 feet. If that’s outside the scope of the project or otherwise not feasible, it would be great to at least see the intersections pinched down closer to 20 feet where there are curb extensions being installed on both sides.
• The relatively large turning radii (i.e., 25-30’) look reminiscent of the gentle sweep of a slip lane or highway entrance/exit ramp. The resulting curves at the intersections at 30th and 31st Avenues make it look like drivers would be accommodated in turning at speeds at or above the posted 20 mph speed limit rather than encouraged to slow down. I believe Toole Design’s plans for the Jefferson Street traffic calming project was able to achieve turning radii of 15-20’ where curb extensions were installed. Is it possible to achieve sharper turns with smaller turning radii to further slow drivers traveling through the marked crosswalks on Nicholson Street?
• Related to the above comments, is it possible to further extend the proposed curb extensions on Nicholson Street to achieve in shorter pedestrian crossing distances (closer to 20-24’, down from the proposed 40-60’)?
• Option 1 for 31st Avenue looks like it would be more effective at calming traffic.
• While probably beyond the scope of this project, it would be incredibly helpful to have the crosswalk markings in front of Felegy Elementary repainted/clarified. There are some painted over longitudinal bar crosswalks that probably were intended to be fully removed. However, they are still oddly visible on either side of the current crosswalk. While definitely outside the scope of this project, it would be great to see the current, basic transverse crosswalk in front of the school updated to a raised sidewalk/crosswalk with high-visibility markings.
