Street Art Pilot Project

The Department of Public Works is seeking your input on a pilot project to beautify City streets with art! Painted designs will add a pop of color to the streetscape while also defining traffic & pedestrian right of ways.

The City of Hyattsville is working with Toole Design and Baltimore-based creative agency Graham Projects to design the spaces with your input!

Designs will be added to:

Jefferson and 40th Ave
Church Place

Thank you to all who submitted design suggestions and voted on the final designs! The results of the community vote are below!

Why street art?

Installing high contrast designs on roadways provides increased visibility for drivers and pedestrians, slowing traffic and more clearly defining the pedestrian right of way.

Street art can also be used to activate public places, adding life and vibrancy to what is otherwise a utilitarian space.

All designs utilize a high-friction, commercial grade pavement coating to ensure they stand the test of time and are safe to walk on.

Based on the ideas submitted at the City's Anniversary Festival and through this platform, Graham Projects developed the design proposals below for community review.

Cindy Zork3 years ago The Coffeehouse Jamboree pavement art design combines steamy coffee cups along Church Place and abstracted music staffs and notes along Gallatin Street. The purple and red coffee cups and teal and brown steam play off the energy of the adjacent Vigilante Coffee location. Around the corner, melodic, diagonal bands of purple, red, teal and yellow honor the musical culture of Hyattsville.---El diseño artístico del pavimento de Coffeehouse Jamboree combina tazas de café humeantes a lo largo de Church Place y pentagramas y notas musicales abstractos a lo largo de Gallatin Street. Las tazas de café moradas y rojas y el vapor verde azulado y marrón juegan con la energía de la ubicación adyacente de Vigilante Coffee. Cindy Zork3 years ago The Bean There Sun That street mural celebrates the dynamic activity and positive energy of Hyattsville with a bold, triangular pattern of bright colors along Church Place, and a matching vista of clouds and sun rays along Gallatin Street. The purple, brown, red, yellow and blue triangles hugging Church Place are accented with turquoise coffee beans. These same colors repeat in the lofty sky mural stretching across Gallatin Street. ---El mural de la calle Bean There Sun That celebra la actividad dinámica y la energía positiva de Hyattsville con un llamativo patrón triangular de colores brillantes a lo largo de Church Place, y una vista a juego de nubes y rayos de sol a lo largo de Gallatin Street. Cindy Zork3 years ago The Pinwheel Susan pavement mural is a spin on Maryland’s state flower, the Black-Eyed Susan, turned into a pinwheel. Multiple residents shared drawings of flowers growing out of the intersection, as well as expressions of Maryland pride. From the intersection’s center spreads a large yellow bloom from which reverberates dynamic bands of bright turquoise and orange. These colorful, angled rays continue around the four sidewalk corners. ---El mural de pavimento Pinwheel Susan es un giro en la flor del estado de Maryland, Black-Eyed Susan, convertida en un molino. Varios residentes compartieron dibujos de flores que crecían en la intersección, así como expresiones de orgullo por Maryland. Cindy Zork3 years ago The Compass Heart street art design features four large, orange hearts emblazoned with vibrant blue “H”s for Hyattsville. Present in several drawings from residents, the symbols of love pivot around a large, four-pointed emblem of purple, turquoise, and blue. The compass-like directions extend on to each of the four sidewalk corners where concentric bands of matching colors continue. ---El diseño de arte urbano Compass Heart presenta cuatro grandes corazones naranjas adornados con vibrantes "H" azules de Hyattsville. Presentes en varios dibujos de los residentes, los símbolos del amor giran alrededor de un gran emblema de cuatro puntas de color púrpura, turquesa y azul. Las direcciones similares a las de una brújula se extienden a cada una de las cuatro esquinas de la acera donde continúan las bandas concéntricas de colores a juego.

Cindy Zork3 years ago Taking inspiration from the vibrant local fibers community, the Quilted Crossing asphalt art design is based on the classic “log cabin” quilt pattern, as suggested by an online art submission. Bold rectangular blocks weave around the center of the intersection. The vibrant spectrum of colors, including, purple, red, orange, yellow, green, teal, and blue, symbolically represent Hyattsville’s celebrated diversity. ---Inspirándose en la vibrante comunidad de fibras locales, el diseño de arte de asfalto de Quilted Crossing se basa en el patrón clásico de colcha de la "cabaña de troncos", como se sugiere en una presentación de arte en línea. Bloques rectangulares audaces se entrelazan alrededor del centro de la intersección.
