Hyattsville Ward Redistricting 2022
The City of Hyattsville undergoes redistricting of its five Wards every 10 years following the taking of the U.S. Census. This effort ensures an equitable population distribution amongst the Wards for equal representation on the City Council. The Wards cannot have a population distribution of greater or less than 10% from smallest to largest Ward.
Following the 2020 Census, it was determined that Wards 3 and 5 were no longer compliant with the +/- 10% population distribution. City Council selected a nine member Redistricting Commission to evaluate current Census data and make recommendations for new Ward boundaries.

Using public input gathered at community events, Public Hearings, and this platform, the Redistricting Commission developed several Ward maps for City Council's review.
In addition to the public input, the factors considered when drafting the maps included:
- natural and physical boundaries, like geographic features and major roadways;
- population density;
- available demographic data from the 2020 Census (race & ethnicity);
- communities of interest, like home-owners associations or other affiliated interest groups;
- new housing units currently under construction.
At the December 19, 2022 City Council meeting, Council voted to adopt new Ward map boundaries and amend the City Charter. The updated map will go into effect on February 7, 2023.
Phases
Final Map Edits
THIS PHASE OF THE PROJECT IS NOW CLOSED
At the November 7, 2022 Council Meeting, the Redistricting Commission presented two updated maps for City Council's approval: Growth Conscious v3 and Minimal Adjustments.
City Council did not reach consensus on either map option and directed the Redistricting Commission to make edits to the Growth Conscious map. These edits included:
- Review of the Ward 1/2 Boundary along Hamilton Street
- Review of the Ward 1/5 Boundary along 38th Ave
- Review of the Ward 3/4 Boundary to utilize the metro tracks as a natural border
Public comment on the two map options is also being accepted until 6 PM on Monday, November 14, 2022. Review the maps below and use the "Submit Comment" button in the upper right hand corner of the page to leave feedback for the Commission. You can also email your comments to redistricting@hyattsville.org.
The Commission will meet virtually on November 14, 2022 at 7:30 PM to vote on the final map option to submit to City Council. The public is welcome to attend this meeting. The agenda and registration link will be posted here.
The updated map will be presented at the November 21 City Council meeting and Council is expected to select a map that evening. The ward boundary changes must be adopted by Charter Amendment Resolution. A public hearing on the Resolution is schedule for December 19, with adoption tentatively scheduled for the Council Meeting of December 19.
