Race & Equity Plan
The Hyattsville Race and Equity Task Force (RETF) is a resident led committee that was established in 2018 by the Mayor and City Council to develop an ‘equity plan’ for the City of Hyattsville (CoH). The plan was intended to include policy and operational recommendations that advance equitable management of City administration, public services, and community development; and those that would further support residents’ economic mobility and the City’s goal to maintain an inclusive, diverse community.
In 2019 the RETF developed a draft Equity Plan, using a series of meetings, surveys, and community engagements to identify the top five issues facing low- to moderate-income families and individuals living in the City of Hyattsville. These issues are :
● Community Engagement
● Community Safety and Policing
● Housing
● Jobs, Economic Prosperity and Transportation
● Accessibility for People with Disabilities and Aging Populations
The RETF cataloged the City’s assets, gaps, and barriers in these issue areas and proposed recommendations to promote equity and preserve diversity as Hyattsville experiences rapid growth and change. An updated Draft Equity Plan was drafted in 2024 as a continuation of that work.
Race and Equity Taskforce meetings are generally held virtually on Zoom the third Thursday of each month. For more information and to stay engaged with this process visit Race and Social Equity | Hyattsville, MD - Official Website or email Equity@Hyattsville.org.
Phases
Community Led Visioning for Equity
Communities with the most success in achieving wellbeing for ALL residents across races and identities collaborate in developing a vision statement for equity that represents how things should be in order for residents to be healthy, happy and have access to opportunities. To help with imagining this, we use the US Department of Health and Human Services Seven Vital Conditions of Wellbeing Framework , which is a useful tool for conceptualizing holistic well-being and the conditions that give rise to it, as well as identifying levers for community change and improvement.
In this phase of community engagement with the Equity Plan, the RETF hosted an in-person visioning session asking residents to consider the following questions which will be incorporated into a vision statement:
What qualities would of government and community would be reflected in your neighborhood, if we achieved racial equity?
•What would be the condition of well-being of our communities?
•What are the values that would permeate our interactions?
•How would you describe what people experience day to day?
Attached are documents outlining the input residents provided that shaped the following draft equity vision statement:
Hyattsville is a place where everyone—no matter their race, immigration status, identity, or background—can thrive. We envision a city where access to housing, food, green spaces, is fair and inclusive for all. Together, we build a creative, connected and welcoming city where every voice matters and well-being is a shared reality.
