Residential Parking Zone Proposal: 5500 block of 38th Ave

Residents along the 5500 block of 38th Avenue have submitted a petition to the City of Hyattsville requesting the establishment of a Residential Parking Zone. This Zone would allow parking for permitted residents only during posted hours.

An administrative hearing was held on November 1, 2022 to allow community members to give public comment in favor or or opposed to the petition. Additional comments were shared here until November 30, 2022.

Rick Shaver4 years ago The street in front of Castle Manor Apartments has allowed tenants to park there for decades. The parking lot in the rear of the complex is practically full now with specific permits assigned to tenants. Where will these additional vehicles park without being ticketed or towed? This is discriminatory against those who choose to rent. I can understand a restriction in front of residences on the opposite side of the street, which are homeowners. Why does a homeowner need parking on the opposite side of the street abutting the apartment complex. This is simply unfair and shows preferential treatment to homeowners. We pay taxes to the City, too!. The burden on renters will be prohibitive and discriminatory. This is not the Hyattsville I have known for the many years I have resided here. I advocate that this proposal be rejected or at the very least allowed further citizen input. This timeline for review and implementation is being rushed through the Council. This proposal will cause undue burden on the hard working tenants of the Castle Manor Apartments and shows a lack of sensitivity to working people…very much of an elitist action.

Mariah Holroyd4 years ago Our apartment complex allows for one parking permit per household. The parking along 38th Ave ensures that my partner and I can both have our vehicles (a necessity as we are both working citizens) and park safely near our apartment. Disallowing access to these parking spaces would be catastrophic to us as we must both have our vehicles to safely transport us to our respective jobs. Please do not take this away from us.

Stephanie Bonilla4 years ago After reading the proposed zoning parking permit, I wholeheartedly disagree with the zoning. I have lived here for 6 going on 7 years. Parking was always available for our apartment complex at Castle Manor. Several of us, including myself are limited to one parking spot per apartment regardless of how many cars we own. Visitors, family and tenants who live here use the street parking to avoid getting towed in the parking lot.There are no homes on our side of the street of our apartment except for one all the way in the corner 38th and Jefferson which have their own zone parking already on their street.Homeowners on the Jefferson St, 38th Avenue on the opposite side, Kennedy Place and Hamilton St all have their own private driveway to park their car which houses minimum 2/3 cars. They also have zone parking already with the homeowners on those side of the street further down. We specifically use the apartment block to park our cars since not everyone can get a parking pass for the back parking lot since it's limited. For 6 years, I've lived here and everyone who's lived here has always used the apartment complex parking to park near our apartments.To request that our side of the street to be zoned for parking purposes is not only discriminatory and prejudice, it's also inconvenient for us apartment owners and shows preference and favoritism to homeowners when they already have their own private parking and zone parking already further down the street and numerous parking spots aside as well closer to their homes all the way to Hyatt Park.Parking spot has been reduced already on our street with the green spots and the poles that have been installed recently which took away about 4 spots on our side of the street.We are already being reduced to less parking spots to make it more convenient for homeowners that are coming in recently and wanting to make all these changes that have been here for decades and never bothered previous homeowners.I hope the council listen to us as this entire 38th Ave of Castle Manor relies on this parking near our homes and allows us to have a more safety measure since the city has not put any lighting on our street to provide a more safe street.

Danielle Jeter4 years ago This petition is completely discriminatory against us living in the apartments. We too are residents of this block! The petition area highlights 12 homes (houses). Our complex has 70 homes that potentially utilize this parking (approximately 14 Castle Manor homes/families in the building directly on this block). There are far more families in our Castle Manor community that rely on this parking. This would impact me greatly. It is unfair for all our families to face being towed and/or having to walk far and possibly unsafe distances to our homes. As a young woman that works nights and often gets home late, I would be extremely dismayed if the parking lot was full and I had to park far away from my home and walk alone. A compromise could be to leave the portion of 38th Ave that turns into Jefferson St open for use by Castle Manor residents, as that is what we need the most. I hope you consider our concerns and come to a fair decision.

Why are you going to restrick these parking spaces on 38th Ave that are not enough for the residents?Disallowing access to these parking spaces would be catastrophic to the residents that are already struggling to park their vehicles on 38th Ave. Please do not take these parking spaces away from us.
