Nicholson Street 4000 Block Traffic Calming Project

Residents in the 4000 block of Nicholson Street submitted a petition in May 2024 to evaluate the block for installation of traffic calming devices.

The petition was received by City Clerk’s Office on May 31, 2024. The Clerk’s Office validated the petition met the 60% signature requirement per City Code Section 114-8 (B). The petition was submitted to the Department of Public Works for evaluation.

Public Hearing

City Council scheduled a Public Hearing for October 7, 2024 to hear public testimony regarding this petition. A notification of the hearing was mailed to residents of the 4000 block of Nicholson Street as well as residents of 31st Ave and 43rd Street on September 20, 2024.

During the Hearing City staff presented an overview of the conditions in the petitioned area. Public testimony was received from four (4) residents in support of traffic calming for the 4000 block of Nicholson Street. Read the meeting minutes.

At the October 21, 2024, Council Meeting Council authorized a time extension for the decision on traffic calming devices for the 4000 block of Nicholson Street. The extension was requested to allow staff to develop additional recommendations, as the initial resident request to install a speed hump was not recommended by City staff. At the December 2, 2024, Council Meeting Staff presented a motion to install a yield street on the 4000 block of Nicholson Street. This motion was tabled by City Council in order to provide additional time for staff to conduct outreach. Read the meeting minutes.
