Review the proposed traffic calming measures

These measures include:

Chicanes along Longfellow St. Chicanes slow motor vehicle traffic by introducing a series of lateral shifts in the roadway.
Curb Extension/Bulb Outs along Lancer Dr, Longfellow St, 35th Ave, and 36th Ave. Curb extensions, also referred to as bulb-outs, create an extension of the sidewalk or curb into the parking lane to reduce the available street width.
High-Visibility Crosswalks crossing Lancer Dr, Longfellow St, 35th Ave, 35th Pl, and 36th Ave. High-visibility crosswalks indicate desired locations for pedestrian crossings and indicate where motorists should yield to pedestrians crossing the street.

Jordan Duffner1 year ago I’m a resident of Longfellow with very young children. Witnessing the speeding on our street for many years, I feel that speed bumps would be the best option to reduce driver speeds while maintaining parking availability and the aesthetics of the street. While I’m open to the chicanes, I don’t want them to detract from the aesthetics of our street. Neon green paint with pickets (which have been used elsewhere in the neighborhood) are unattractive and get damaged/messy easily. If chicanes are chosen, I’d prefer a version that looks more like an extension of the sidewalk and has plants/trees.

Kevin Kelly1 year ago I am against bulbouts and chicanes, main reason it would eliminate what parking we do have and I don’t understand how they slow down the traffic, I also drive on other roads that you have had this done have not noticed any improvement outside of residents losing parking areas. (This seems to be the consensus among neighbors that I have talked to and the comments that I have read here.)The intersection of Jefferson and 38th Ave forces people to drive out into oncoming when trying to turn and I do use this way to go to a controlled intersection instead of trying to go across Hamilton St. to avoid an accident . I am in favor of speed humps that the residents have requested and marked crosswalk.The use of permit parking could help but am still not sure, I would like to know more of how it works because my son does come to visit with his family.kevin

Kurt Brintzenhofe1 year ago I did not know about your 9 April meeting here at the corner, but I guess you thought you did your part by putting it on the website. How about being a little more proactive if you really care about what neighbors think - you are getting paid to do this correct?You are supposed to build to requirements, and the requirement here is to protect young children, who cross the street to a friends house, from getting hit by people speeding or not paying attention as they cut through to Queens Chapel Rd. Two weeks ago I saw an idiot do a wheely on his Vespa motorcycle all the way down our street. If speed bumps were there, he would have been driving safely, with bulbs, he would not have been hindered. Listen to what the neighborhood is asking for, and stop pretending to listen!

1 year ago I advocate for the steepest speed bump or hump that can be installed. I regret I missed the meeting on 4/9.I do not wish to denigrate anyone trying their best, though bulb outs and chicanes are poor ideas for remedying the issues on Lancer for sure, where I live too. Not sure about Longfellow.It can be difficult to impossible to find a parking spot on Lancer in broad daylight, let alone after 9pm. We're seldom out that late, though when we are, about 40-60% of the time we need to park on 35th place and even on Longfellow sometimes. Taking away at least 10 parking spaces on one of the narrowest streets in the city will result in greater hardships and complaints from residents, and certainly me. And parking on 36th Avenue is not a legal alternative with the restrictions in place already.Speed bumps or humps are the only solution, in my opinion. The higher the better to lessen cut-through traffic, speeding and the CONSTANT running of the stop sign at 35th place, as in 6 or 7 of every 10 cars - perhaps more.I do endorse the idea of high-visibility crosswalks. There should be one at 35th Place and Lancer, in addition to those proposed. We cross that fairly often.I would also ask consideration of a flashing stop sign at 35th Place, and the biggest speed bump of all just before it for those traveling from Queens Chapel to 36th Avenue to stop the sign running.Thank you for the opportunity to give feedback.

Mary 1 year ago I was at the meeting about the calming suggestions. After thinking about this and watching the continuous traffic on Lancer Dr I don't think the Curb Extension/Bulb Out will take care of the problem. As I said at the meeting, speed, running Stop sign, and parking problems are the main problem on Lancer Dr. I know the Emergency vehicles are concerned about getting to the addresses as am I, but we have had them come down our street mutliple times lately, and they can only drive very slowly now without any calming devices. Instead of 'speed bumps", why not "speed humps". The speed humps heights are not as high as the speed bumps.Residentual parking may help a little, but concerned we can't get enough signatures on Lancer Dr.

User 5875771 year ago I live on Lancer Drive and fully agree that we can use some traffic control. However, I do not believe these proposed plans will solve the problem but will instead create or intensify existing problems.Lancer drive and Longfellow are already too narrow and very often one car has to stop in order from one from another direction to pass. If anything, I’m for wondering the streets and narrowing the sidewalks.Furthermore, I am concerned about the parking we will lose over bump-outs or chicanes. I am in favor of speed bumps or something of the like. I’d also propose looking into some incentive for cars to turn on Hamilton or one of the other larger streets rather than Lancer. Incentives for alternative routes should be looked at as well not just obstacles for driving and on these streets.

1 year ago I am a resident of Lancer Dr. I support the high visibility marking of pedestrian cross walks, but I do not support the creation of bump outs on Lancer Dr. Residents are parked on both sides of the street 24/7, already effectively narrowing the road to a single lane. Bump outs' effectiveness comes from narrowing the road, but parked cars are already serving this function. Adding bump outs would cost additional money and limit parking availability without additional traffic slowing benefit. The only effective traffic slowing measure I've seen on Lancer Dr is during the brief period several years ago while a traffic study was being performed. People actively braked for the little black tube that was running across the road. Every time. Highly effective, low cost, no lost parking, no impact on emergency vehicles. Just have a neighbor be in charge of rolling it up before it snows. Running a black rubber tube across a road doesn't show up in portfolios of traffic control measures, but it should be at the top of the list, and I would love to see it implemented here.

Daniel Amador Renard1 year ago Given that the proposed interventions will reduce parking spaces, part of the design should consider delineating parking spots so that individuals maximize parking space on these streets. I am also a little concerned about the bump outs when turning from Queens Chapel. Without a light at that intersection, it is very dangerous to turn there and bump outs would make it more dangerous for turning drivers and cars that are seeking to turn onto queens chapel from lancer.

Isaac Castillo1 year ago While I understand (and agree with) the use of bulb-outs for pedestrian safety, I do not think they will have any positive effects on the traffic accidents that continue to happen at the intersection of Lancer Drive and Queens Chapel Road. I have found no research studies that show the positive effects of bulb outs on traffic accidents - all the research focuses on pedestrian safety. I have difficulty conceptualizing how the bulb out will prevent drivers from speeding across Queens Chapel Road or quickly turning onto Lancer.In addition, as a homeowner who lives near one of the proposed bulb outs, I am concerned about the limited space to get into and out of my driveway. I would encourage further consideration of how the bulb outs might affect movement into and out of driveways. And also recommend the addition of no parking zones near the bulb outs. I fear the unintended consequence of the bulb outs making it more dangerous to get in and out of driveways of homes near the bulb outs - because you are taking away space to back out. Especially given what we know about how fast people turn onto Lancer Drive - and with little actual research showing bulb outs reduce speed.

Jacqueline Miller1 year ago We are generally happy with these suggestions. Thanks for putting them together! I think our only concern is the loss of parking. Somedays, parking is difficult to find on Longfellow St and some houses don't have driveways. Lancer often is very full with parked cars. With the proposed business/medical clinic on 36th, we are concerned about additional cars parking in the neighborhood. This plan will cost us some parking spaces. But, I think if we can test it out with non-permanent structures first, that would be great. We are excited about all the unique and creative features being considered to slow traffic on our streets. Thank you!
