King Park Renovation

King Park is getting a makeover!

On November 1, 2022, Robert J. King Park on 4205 Gallatin Street closed for a major renovation. Work includes improved stormwater management, replacement of the playground structures, updated landscaping, and a restored pavilion area. The park is expected to reopen in 2024.

We need your creative ideas! Add suggestions of what you'd like to see in King Park by using the "Submit your idea" button in the upper right hand corner of the page. You can also review and comment on others' suggestions below.

The City is looking for input in the areas of:

Playground equipment
Landscaping
Community space
Community programming

Please note that there are some elements of the park that will not be changing as part of this renovation, including:

Large trees: large trees currently in the park will be preserved to the extent possible
Pavilion area: the wood pavilions will be restored and will remain in place
Masonic Lodge: the City cannot alter the wall of the Masonic lodge that serves as the park's eastern boundary

Suggestions will be collected until October 3 and then compiled for a community poll in the next phase of the project.

You can also provide input in-person at a community planning charrette hosted by the Low Impact Development Center on September 22, 6-7 PM in King Park.

Alyce Thompson4 years ago My daughter has intellectual and physical disabilities, and I would love to see a playground that is fully inclusive for children with disabilities. Across all of Hyattsville's playgrounds, there are only a few pieces of equipment that are truly accessible for children with disabilities - and I often find that children without visible disabilities are using them. While it does speak to the fact that inclusive equipment works for all children, it does limits my daughter's access to the limited equipment she can safely play with. A fully inclusive playground with a range of play structures that are accessible for children with a variety of disabilities would be so valued. People and children with disabilities are a segment of our community that are often overlooked, unsupported, and under-served. (And bonus points if the playground can also serve older children with disabilities as well!)

Janelle Tupper4 years ago As much as possible, it would be great to have the playground equipment make use of the shade provided by the trees. Playgrounds get so hot in the sun that it's sometimes hard to stay and play, and this park has some tree cover potential! Our 2-year-old loves playing here and we'd love a new playground that incorporated equipment for little kids like this one does. He likes to remember parks by their identifying feature (this is fire truck park, Driskell is train park, Deitz is ant park, etc). so a unique play element would be great from his perspective as well as some traditional elements like swings and slides.

Rachel Noyce4 years ago The old structures at King Park were great when my kids were 1-3, but as 5-year-olds they have already largely aged out of the structures there. I would love to see a range of playground equipment: some smaller structures for kids 1-5 with short slides and stairs for the littles, plus some much taller climbing structures for kids 5-12, similar to the ones at Heurich Park playground, University Park playground, or at other playgrounds in DC. Swings are a definite must!! They are fun for kids of all ages. A splash pad or mister feature (like the misters at the playground in Walker Mill Regional Park) would be a fantastic bonus if budget allows. The gazebo area with tables is great and I would love if the new playground could retain a similar feature. However, the large open grassy area is very underutilized space, and could be much better utilized if filled with playground equipment.

Brian Banks4 years ago It's never too early for kids to learn about the history of the land we now call Hyattsville! The city could design a play area that reflects the lives of Nanticoke communities that lived here before we did. Instead of modern style houses for kids to play in, the city could provide kid friendly play structures that harken to an earlier time! We know the idea is possible because the Berwyn Heights playground brings this style to life! This is especially fitting given the relatively high population of native Americans in Hyattsville.

Brian Banks4 years ago With more than three months in Hyattsville facing average temperatures in the 80s, and a summer of over-capacity days at Hamilton splash park, the city is in need of additional places for kids to splash around. It could be a fountain, waterfall, misters, or even a wet floor (like in City Center DC or the portrait gallery atrium). Any of these would provide an affordable and open place for kids to cool off in the summer!

Brian Banks4 years ago Hyattsville's past, present, and future are connected to its location on route 1. King Park is one of the closest parks to route 1. To celebrate its unique location, an art piece could capture the range of destinations along route 1 from Maine to Florida. It could be a mural with notable locations depicted, a sculpture denoting the locations, or another artistic nod to one of America's great through ways.

Kristen Wares4 years ago I am submitting this on behalf of my daughter, Tess Gembecki age 9 (4th grader at HES). She suggests a Firehouse Themed Playground. This would have fun play equipment for all ages, from a fire truck to play with to fun climbing walls and fire poles and slides. She also suggests a fire hydrant themed water feature for a fun splash pad. Lastly, she suggests a Dalmatian themed section for dogs to play since every fire house needs a dog. She also mentioned to make sure there is sufficient sail shades over the play structure to protect kids and parents from the sun in the summer. She would also love to ensure that there are native plants and maybe some lovely lounge seating for people who may like to read in the park (similar the Yards Park in DC).

Pat Moone4 years ago As a grandparent who lives in the neighborhood I have been using King Park for many years with my younger grandchildren. The things I’d like to see remain are 1. The paved circle used for scooters and running for young children. 2. The fence and gate to keep young ones safe from running into the street, which can be quite busy at times. 3. A green area for playing in. 4.. The triple slide is a nice size for toddlers The park could use some newer updated equipment including a swing I hope you will keep this as a ‘Tot Lot’ because this neighborhood needs one. It is used by many families including grandparents!
