Gallatin Street Traffic Calming Measures

The City of Hyattsville is evaluating traffic calming measures for the 3500 - 3700 blocks of Gallatin Street. Community members along that street petitioned the City for a review of traffic controls in order to reduce speeding and running stop signs through this residential area.

The proposed traffic calming plan was shared with community members at a public meeting on August 27, 2022. Based on community feedback, the final plan was shared at a community meeting on May 25.

Review the proposed traffic calming measures along 3500 - 3700 Gallatin Street

These measures include:

New sidewalks & crosswalks
Improved signage for drivers and pedestrians
Bump outs: identified as green on the map, these will be temporarily painted on the roadway and surrounded by temporary flexible traffic delineators. The intent is to test their utility and placement before making them more permanent with curbs and plantings. Bump outs slow traffic by forcing drivers to be aware of their surroundings when approaching and leaving intersections.
Speed table: identified as a red hatch on the map near the intersection of 37th Avenue and Gallatin Street, this raised pavement forces drivers to slow down. Speed tables are longer than speed humps with a flat top. There are frequently crosswalks on top of speed tables to help make them more visible to drivers.
