Flag Redesign: Top Five Designs

The City of Hyattsville is in the process of redesigning its flag! Our current City flag was developed in the 1970s, and since then, our City has grown and changed significantly. As an important city symbol, the City Council wants to make sure our flag accurately represents the community and that City residents would proudly fly on porches, put on bumper stickers, or even get as a tattoo!

To make this happen, City Council established a volunteer Flag Redesign Committee. This committee began drafting guidelines for the new flag, and once the guidelines were in place, it was time to ask for your design ideas.

We received close to 100 flag design submissions! We are so grateful to everyone who participated in designing a flag representative of our growing and diverse community.

In some instances, designs have been slightly modified by the Flag Redesign Committee to better align with the North American Vexililogical Association's flag design principles

Jacquelyn Smith2 years ago I may be biased because it’s my favorite flower, but I love the Black Eyed Susan design! It uses Maryland colors, which will create cohesion when the city flag flies next to the state flag, and it’s overall just an attractive choice to me. However, I also really like the Rails design! I’ve lived near the tracks in different homes here, and I’m so fond of the way Hyattsville is transforming industrial space to community space (like the bike path!). I think the flag evokes that! I would be very happy with either of these.The White Oak makes me think of White Oak, the place. The rings almost a little too geometric and the other flower just doesn’t stick out to me. My two cents!

Michael Bonds2 years ago After seeing some of the comments here, I figured it would be helpful to show what some of the finalist designs would look like if changed based on the feedback:The "Flower" design, with the black-eyed Susan from the "Black-eyed Susan" design (with some added detail). The state flower is now recognizable as such, and the nods specifically to Hyattsville history are retained.The "Black-eyed Susan" design, with brighter colors inspired by the "Flower" design. The large black triangle is removed, and the flag feels more inviting.A design combining the train tracks from the "Rails" design with black-eyed Susan and willow oak (Prince George's county official tree) elements. This has been submitted before, and I understand it's poor form to try submitting a design that already got a fair shake from the Redesign Committee and didn't make the cut, but I still strongly believe in it, and others in the community have hinted that combining the motifs would be a good idea.

I agree with another commenter here that the black-eyed Susan of the black/yellow flag on the yellow/blues flag would be a terrific add.The black-eyed Susan flag looks like a replica of one that some people created already: https://www.hyattsvillewire.com/2022/06/14/group-of-hyattsville-residents-propose-new-flag-design-for-the-city-sponsored-post/ Frankly, it's not appealing and is very dark. I think that we should complement our state flag, not copy it with the same color scheme. The yellow/blues design best pays homage to Hyattsville and has lively, inviting colors.

User 6081152 years ago Dear New Flag Committee,I don't wish to be a downer or outlier, but I'm not a fan of any of these designs. They're all too abstract and they fail to fully capture the essence of the Hyattsville community and what we represent. When chosing a design think about how the average resident would describe how the Flag represents yhe Hyattsville community-'using a "30 Second Elevator Speech". What's wrong with the Flag we already have? Couldn't we use the money being spent on rebranding Hyartsville through this Flag on a program or programs that offer direct support to the City's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts?Thanks for seeking resident input.Sincerely Yours,Kelly Burrello

Douglas Gates2 years ago The two floral designs are both attractive in their own ways. The geometric design of the Flower option is balanced and would look great on a flag, but the flower itself is overly stylized such that it's no longer recognizable as a Black Eyed Susan. Likewise, the flower and color scheme of the Black Eyed Susan option go well together, but the asymmetric triangular design is a bit intense and gives off an "Eye of Sauron" look. I recommend using the Flower design, replacing the existing flower with the Black Eyed Susan version, and using the black/red/yellow color scheme, with red as the primary to avoid being overly dark or bright.

Will Seath2 years ago The colors and simplicity of the “Flower Flag” really stand out and would make for a beautiful flag that represents the city well.It would be interesting to see the symbol, however, replaced with the Black-Eyed Susan from that particular option. It’s more like an actual Black-Eyed Susan in form. I appreciate the attempt to symbolize the five wards in both the “Flower” and “Five Rings” options, but I don’t think that representing five rather arbitrary political divisions of the city whose borders change (and whose numbers are theoretically flexible) is the most compelling choice. The “Black-Eyed Susan” flag, itself, has far too dark a palette and looks, frankly, sinister. The “Five Rings” flag symbol suffers from corporate-logo abstraction and a palette that looks too primary.I don’t care for the asymmetrical composition of the “Oak” option (especially on a hoisted flag), nor either the palette or the execution of the “Rails” option (those particular shades of green and blue clash).The palette and field of the ”Flower” option with the Black-Eyed Susan motif would be highly distinctive and memorable.

Dylan Nir2 years ago Good flag design is really hard. A flag needs to stand out and be distinct from others, but also have some meaningful tie-ins. Black Eyed Susan does both really well. I'm new to Maryland, but everyone seems to absolutely love the state flag. Black Eyed Susan integrates those colors seamlessly. But it also introduces a really unique design specific for Hyattsville that's very very cool. The other choices aren't terrible (all are better than the abysmal city flag we had before) but Black Eyed Susan does the best job of creating a symbol and a design theme to rally around. It's good for Maryland. It's good for Hyattsville. Get this bad boy on a flag pole ASAP! And city council, if it wins, any chance you can send one to my house? This is a flag I can rep proudly!!

And that "survey" that pops up has images and CONTEXT for each of the flag designs.You all probably figured that out but I entirely missed it and thought we were supposed to "vote" here in the comments! I mean I suppose this is good for exchanging views with others in the community, but given that several comments are about folks wanting context, I think I'm not the only one who mistakenly thought "comments" were where we were supposed to "vot

Austin Fraser2 years ago The "white oak" & "flower" are my preferred flags given the simplicity of their design, nod to the Anacostia/natural environment & connection to the built environment. The colors are also really attractive & almost relaxing. I like the symbolism behind the "River/Ward rings" but it's on the verge of being too busy which was the entire point of changing the flag, to be in line with vexhillology. The "black eyed susan" & "rails" have way too much going on & the colors are a bit jarring. The "Black eyed Susan" theme has been floating around for a while & I've never found it appealing wondering if it was a "Star Trek" or "Star Wars" reference.
