43rd Street Traffic Calming

Community members met with staff from the Department of Public Works on April 7, 2026 to discuss ongoing traffic concerns. Residents expressed that safety of young children is a high priority given that many families live along 43rd Street and there is limited line of sight for drivers coming over the hill. The primary concern shared at the meeting was traffic speeding on 43rd Street between Oliver and Oglethorpe Streets. There was also concern about traffic speeding down Oglethorpe Street and not following stop signs or one-way street designations. Temporary bollards had previously made incorrect access to the one-way streets more difficult, but these were removed following some road repaving and not replaced.

The DPW team also observed the need for repair to the sidewalks and curb ramps on Oglethorpe Street, as well as some water damage to the roadway on Oglethorpe.

Suggested action items:

• The City will put out speed counters on 43rd Street to get current data on traffic behavior. The team will also pull previously collected data and review findings.
• A signage assessment will be done to ensure clarity on roadway direction.
• More signs are needed indicating children are walking and playing on Oglethorpe Street near the intersections with 43rd Street and 43rd Avenue.*
• Suggestion to add quick curb and raised crossings at the intersections of Oglethorpe and 43rd Avenue/43rd Street to deter wrong-way turns.*
• Investigate the installation of a speed hump and associated signage on 43rd Street to mitigate speeding over the hill.*
• Improvement of the Oglethorpe road surface, curb ramps, and sidewalks.*

*Improvements and installations of signs and traffic calming devices are contingent upon available funding. Improvements may need to be phased over several Fiscal Years depending on cost.
