Greetings city officials and outside consultants,
I live on Nicholson across from the school and I am the proud parent of a precocious 2-year-old. I know speeding on this road has been a problem for quite a while and I'm delighted to see action being taken on the issue.
Of the 2 options for the 31st Ave intersection I strongly prefer option 1. I think if you don't make that right onto Nicholson eastbound super tight, cars are going to continue to blow through the stop sign. I'd also urge you to consider a roundabout at that intersection, which would solve the issue of cars running the stop signs there, (no stop signs to run :)) and hopefully help alleviate some of the speeding.
A few more thoughts:
If you want to do something really bold, I'd urge you to consider an edge lane road on Nicholson from Ager to Queens Chapel: https://www.advisorybikelanes.com/ People will probably hate it at first, but it would slow down traffic *and* encourage more people to ride bikes which seems like a win-win to me.
Assuming you're not ready to risk the ire of the neighborhood, I'd like to see the travel lane width further reduced to 10 feet per these guidelines: https://nacto.org/publication/urban-street-design-guide/street-design-elements/lane-width/
Additionally, I feel that there needs to be some sort of calming device at the intersection of Nicholson and Ager. As discussed in Strong Towns's excellent analysis, Ager road is designed for vehicles to travel at speeds up to 55mph, and I believe that we need to send a strong signal to cars turning onto Nicholson that this is a residential street and they need to slow waaaay down.
Also, I would love to see the crosswalk at Heurich playground extended through the parking lot all the way to the playground. As it stands, pedestrian (and wheelchair!) access to the park is confusing at best and dangerous at worst.
Finally, I know this is far beyond the scope of the project but I'll just put it out there anyway: can we please put a fence around the playground? I'd really like to give my toddler room to explore on his own without worrying that he's going to wander into the parking lot and get run over. And for the love of god can we get some shade in the playground. On summer days the sun is downright punishing.
